Dallas-area snow makes for a beautiful but dangerous Christmas

Christmas is a time for memories, and this was one to remember.

Steadily falling snow made North Texas worthy of a Currier and Ives print at the same time as it made for dangerously slick conditions.

Reports of 2 inches of snow were common in Dallas County, and parts of Collin County were covered in more than 4 inches.

The fast-moving storm dropped temperatures below freezing during the day Tuesday, but even lower temperatures — as low as 18 — were expected at night.

Hundreds remember white buffalo on birthday, mourn its death at Lakota ranch

GREENVILLE — One year ago Saturday, Lakota Buffalo Ranch owner Arby Little Soldier and the Lakota Sioux tribe rejoiced at the rare birth of a white buffalo revered by American Indians.

But Saturday’s powwow at the ranch to celebrate Lightning Medicine Cloud’s birthday instead had an air of solemnity as hundreds of North Texans mourned the calf’s death.

“Last year this time, we were hugging and jumping with joy,” Little Soldier said. “His birth was so unpredictable. It was just a joy for us.”

Irving teen Oscar Gomez, whose bucket list inspired many, dies of cancer

Sick with bone cancer last fall, Oscar Gomez turned an essay in his English class titled “If I Only Had 24 Hours to Live” into his bucket list, inspiring everyone close to him.

Oscar, 17, died early Thursday morning, with only a few items remaining on his list. Just hours before, his English teacher, Ruth Amy Schoen at Barbara Cardwell Preparatory Career Center in Irving, reminisced about him.

Neighbors horrified at news of family’s slayings in Grapevine

GRAPEVINE — Aziz Yazdanpanah seemed to be losing control of his life in recent months — his wife left him, his house was in foreclosure, and his 19-year-old daughter was dating a young man he didn’t like.
